MEMORY 12
Gained on: Day 168, Seawitch and Hook's game
Form: In the form of a small jar. You must open and sniff it to take you memory. Hope you love the smell of rotting fish
Shareable: 3/4 [taken]
Memory:
Significant-Negative - Finding out about Coulomb's plans, sentencing him to death. (Drama CD / implied)
What it is:
This will explain pretty well what the hell happened in the last memory he got (though he still has to take it). Basically...! Coulomb, who was Ling's tutor and someone he cared for like a older brother, was working on a scheme to kill Ling's older siblings (Ling is the 12th heir) in order to ensue Ling would be able to claim the throne for himself.
... with the full intention of using Ling to basically rule Xing, himself, once he was on the throne.
After gathering enough evidence, Ling saw through his plans and understood what Coulomb's intention was, so he exposed his plans more or less publicly (there's a flashback with Ling talking with a bunch of higher ups? It's likely a council or some such but it's not specified) and then sentenced him to death.
Considerations:
I SOMEHOW MANAGED TO GET COULOMB'S MEMORIES ONE AFTER THE OTHER but i guess it's cool 'cause with this he basically remembers everything important about him now. This memory is not the worse he could get but it's pretty bad anyway, for a variety of reason. Finding out Coulomb planned to use him was a huge betrayal for him, and it's made very clear throughout the Drama CD when Ling reminiscences about it (and like I said in the previous memory write up, he is really upset upon meeting him again). Ling himself is the one who states he saw Coulomb as a older brother, which... for a guy who has more than 50 siblings that he barely knows and doesn't give a shit about, is a pretty heavy statement. Coulomb taught him both martial arts and sword fighting! And the first memory he got about him was one where he told him about his intention to become strong in order to protect the Yao clan-- so it was basically a DECLARE MY HOPES AND DREAMS!! So yeah TL;DR, they were CLOSE. Combine that with the fact Ling was ten year old at the time, and you can get why finding out someone he cared so much for betrayed him was a pretty huge blow.
The way I see it, at ten Ling was already used to being ruthless when necessary in order to defend himself and by extension, his clan, so the fact he readily sentenced one guy-- even one he cared for-- to death for a crime like that probably is not super surprising. Since heirs trying to kill each other is normal (though probably not quite so to the public eye-- I'm guessing that while relationship is clearly tense, they do pretend somewhat and killing each other isn't exactly legal), I am pretty sure the making Coulomb's plan public and sentencing him to death wasss partly sending a clear message that he is not to be fucked with. So. Yes. There is also that.
Also this memory will tell him that he did have the power to decide over someone else's life even as just a prince (and a ten year old prince, at that). But overall this will teach him a bit more about Xing's politics, will probably give him a lot of feelings over betrayal and will also confirm his readiness to be ruthless.
Overall this is a pretty heavy part of his childhood so, very important memory.
